Prerequisites: It is assumed that students have a basic familiarity with central and peripheral nervous system anatomy and physiology through previous coursework.
Target skills and knowledge: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
- know the basic principles and the main theoretical and methodological issues in the field of Psychophysiology;
- know the recording techniques for measuring the main central and peripheral biosignals;
- explain the interaction among cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physiological variables;
- apply such knowledge to the clinical field by structuring a clinical psychophysiological assessment.
Examination methods: The assessment of learning occurs through the final exam, which ascertains the acquisition of the expected knowledge and competence.
The final exam consists in a written test including 4 open questions (of which 3 requiring brief answers) and 8 multiple-choice questions. The written test lasts 45 minutes. The final grade is computed as the sum of the scores obtained in each question.

For the exam, students must subscribe to the appropriate list through UniWeb. Only UniWeb subscription will be allowed; it will NOT be possible to subscribe via telephone or email under any circumstances. In case of technical problems with UniWeb, students should refer to the appropriate technical assistance resources BEFORE THE CLOSING OF THE SUBSCRIPTION LIST.
Assessment criteria: Evaluation criteria for assessing the expected knowledge and competence are the following:
- completeness of the acquired knowledge on the theoretical and methodological principles addressed during the course;
- ability to congruently describe the technical characteristics of the physiological measures addressed during the course as a function of the information they provide as indices of psychological processes;
- propriety and specificity of the employed terminology, at both conceptual and technical levels.
Course unit contents: The course has two main goals: a) to provide an introduction to biosignal recording techniques and analysis, and to methodological principles in Psychophysiology; b) to provide an introduction to theory and experimental research in major areas of Psychophysiology, with a particular emphasis on physiological correlates of basic psychological processes, both normal and pathological.

1) Basic principles, methodology and empirical research in Psychophysiology.
2) Biosignals and their utility as indices of psychological processes.
3) Activation and relaxation.
4) Emotional activation.
5) Biofeedback and self-regulation.
6) Clinical psychophysiological assessment.

The topics related to the M-PSI/08 SSD will be treated in the final part of the course (2 CFU), and will include the psychophysiological assessment and, crosswise, the topics of emotional activation, relaxation, and biofeedback.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will involve a combination of frontal theoretical lectures, discussions of scientific papers, demonstrations, and in-class exercises. In-class exercises will expand and deepen course topics, and will include audio-visual projections, multimedia materials, exam simulation, and psychophysiological recording using portable equipment.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The PowerPoint lecture slides will be available on the Moodle course platform and are MANDATORY as study material for both attendant and nonattendant students.
Integrative material will include (nonmandatory) scientific papers to be downloaded from the Moodle course platform.

NONATTENDANT students are encouraged to contact the professor (even by phone) during office hours to obtain more information and guidance about the study material.
