Prerequisites: Only some knowledge of elementary Mathematics, and pedestrian information about the nature of the physical word and Informatics are required.
Target skills and knowledge: PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS
The purpose of the course is mainly to provide all students with the basic concepts of general physics. At the end of the Course the student ought to be able to apply what she/he has been learned to face the study of Chemistry,basic Biophysics and Physiology. The applications of physics to life sciences are emphasized.

To obtain skills that enable: 1) management of an electronic computer through the use of the main functions of an operating system; 2) the use of spreadsheets for the collection and processing of data, of word processing programs for the realization of scientific articles, and 3) use of navigation programs for research and consultation with the scientific resources available on the Internet.

Methods of assessment: exercises in the classroom by use of a computer
Assessment criteria: Physics: A score is given to the written test. The scores
in Physics and Basic Informatics are combined to give the
overall mark.
Course unit contents: PHYSICS. Kinematics and the three laws of Dynamics. Conservation of energy and momentum. Fluid mechanics. Heat and energy; the two basic laws of Thermodynamics. Static electric and magnetic fields. Outline of the principles of Electrodynamics. Oscillations and wave phenomena. Physical and geometrical optics.

Main parts and functions of a computer. Elementary knowledge of the hardware, operating system, programs, data, networks and the World Wide Web. Knowing the different types of internet connection available, how to search for information, email and publish on the web. Knowledge of word processors, spreadsheets, presentations and databases.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: PHYSICS AND MATHEMATICS
Measurements and units: the International and CGS Systems. Kinematics: Vector calculus, velocity, acceleration, linear and circular motions. Dynamics of a particle: the law of inertia, Newton's second and third laws, concept of force. Examples of forces. Work and energy: conservation of energy and conservative forces. Non-conservative forces: friction. Elements of dynamics of systems of particles. Oscillatory motion. Heat and temperature. First and Second Law of Thermodynamics, the Carnot engine. Thermodynamic potentials. Electric interaction, Coulomb's law, electric potential, energy relations in an electric field. Electric current. Magnetic interaction, Lorentz magnetic force. Magnetic field produced by a linear current: Biot-Savart's law. The Faraday-Henry law. Electrical oscillations. Wave motion: interference phenomena. Acoustic and electromagnetic waves. Wave propagation, Huygens' principle and diffraction phenomena. Reflection and refraction of plane waves. Wave geometry, lenses and optical instruments.

Operating system: organize files, copy them, delete, move, search; text editor, print management; formatting disk drives. Word Processing: basic settings of the word processor and its modification, file formats, insert, copy, move, delete characters, text formatting, templates, finishing a document, vocabulary and grammar, page setup and printing, tables, drawings and images, importing objects; hyperlinks.

Spreadsheet: basic settings and their modification, document formats, insert, copy, move, delete data, find and replace, rows and columns, sort data, mathematical and statistical functions, formulas, cell formatting, diagrams and graphs, macros.

Database Access and Open Office Org Base: knowing what is a database, records, queries, forms and reports. Relationships between tables.

Computer Networking - Internet: launching, navigation and closing a browser program, basic settings and their modification, access to a web address, search engines, bookmarks. E-mail: read, send, reply to messages, address
books. Bibliographic databases, PubMed and its use; deposits scientific sofware: download and installation. Free programs, shareware and commercial. Notes on network security.

Lectures and discussion of applications with students.

Lectures with an explanation and with direct experimentation on computer for each student; discussion of the results obtained.
