Syllabus
Prerequisites: The course includes the following prerequisites: elements of chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry.
Target skills and knowledge: Students are expected to acquire the following knowledge:
1) definitions of biomaterials and their classification (biological, metallic, polymeric, ceramic and composite);
2) main characteristics of biological tissues;
3) main characteristics of the materials used as biomaterials and the relationships between structure and properties;
4) examples of biomaterials used for the production of prosthetic devices of common clinical use (vascular prostheses, prosthetic heart valves, joint prostheses);
5) biocompatibility definition and assessment.
Students are also expected to acquire the following skills: the ability to express a documented evaluation of the materials to be used for the realization of prosthetic devices.
Examination methods: Regular students are given the opportunity to take two written tests in itinere (compitini), each on half of the program. The mark obtained, which is awarded by rewarding the best students’ performance, is then recorded immediately after the end of the course.
All students are given the opportunity to take the oral exam on the entire program during the official appeals.
Assessment criteria: The preparation of the students is evaluated on the basis of their ability to analytically discuss the topics developed during the lessons, taking into account in particular:
- completeness of the exposure;
- lexicon.
Course unit contents: Biomaterials: definitions and applications. Classification of biomaterials: traditional materials and biological tissues. Solid state: the chemical bond and crystalline structure. Cell components. Fundamentals of cell morphology and biology to define the structure and composition of biological materials. Polymeric biomaterials, metals, ceramics and composites. Medical applications of biomaterials and related issues: characteristics and properties of biomaterials. Biomaterials applications: vascular prostheses, prosthetic heart valves, prosthetic joints. Biocompatibility.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: - The program is mainly carried out through lectures and seminars. In this way the knowledge that students must acquire is proposed.
- Learning objectives are also achieved through the common discussion of some specific topics. The presentation of several "case studies" aims to encourage the participation of students in the discussion, also through group work. In this way the acquisition of specific skills is achieved.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The following reference text is proposed to the students:
- Carlo Di Bello and Andrea Bagno, Biomaterials (second edition). Bologna: Patron Editore, 2016.
Additional materials will be provided to students through Moodle.
