Prerequisites: Knowledge of the contents of Analisi matematica 1 and Fisica 1 courses
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course the student will have gained the basic knowledge of Applied Thermodynamics, Moist Air Thermodynamics, and Heat Transfer. He will be able to face the main issues concerning the conversion of energy from and to different forms, with particular regards of thermal energy.
He will be able to analyse the main thermodynamic cycles and heat transfer issues, in order to solve the main thermodynamics and heat transfer problems.
Examination methods: Written numerical test followed by a written theory test.
The former is conceived by an exercise with some questions to be answered by numerical answers in the requested units.
The latter consists of three open questions to be answered by synthetic but detailed answers.
Assessment criteria: Numerical and theory tests weight 1/2 each on the final mark.
Concerning the numerical test, the numerical answers will be evaluated in relation to a fixed tollerance with respect to the correct answers.
Concerning the theory test, the answers will be evaluated on the basis of the accuracy, the precision, and the synthesis.
Course unit contents: Applied Thermodynamics. Measurement systems and units. Definitions and fundamental properties. The first law of thermodynamcis. The ideal gas. The second law of thermodynamics. Thermodynamics diagrams. Direct cycles for vapour and gas. Inverse cycles.
Moist air thermodynamics. Fundamental properties. Thermodynamic processes. Air conditioning cycles.
Heat transfer. Thermal conduction. Thermal convection. Thermal radiation. Global heat transfer. Heat exchangers.
Applied acoustics: fundamental quantities, an outline of building acoustics and sound insulation
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons (theory) based on power point slides.
Numerical practicals at the blackboard once a week.
