Syllabus
Prerequisites: The student should be able to read in Italian texts describing historical and contemporary social processes.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will learn sociological basic concepts and in particular those of the sociology of work. Moreover, she/he will acquire the tools to understand data and social phenomena linked to Italian and European labour market dynamics. The student at the end of the course should be able to develop an autonomous thought on work in the contamporary society.
Examination methods: At the end of the course the first exam will be written for all the students. The students have to answer to 3 question out of five.
All the other examinations will be oral.
Assessment criteria: The examination will be evaluated according to the following criteria: knowladge of the sociological basic concepts; ability to develop autonomous argument on the social and working phenomena.
Course unit contents: The first part of the course focuses on the concept of society and on the study of the society highlighting the fundamental methods and tools of the sociological research. The most important classical sociologists will be introduced: Emile Durkheim, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Karl Polanyi.
In the second part, the course introduces the history of labour starting from the industrial revolution. The following issues will be discussed: work organization in the production system; the tertiarization; the labour market segmentation; informalization and flexibilization processes; unemployment; productive and reproductive labour; the feminization of work; international migrations; global production chains; industrial relations.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The traditional lectures will be complemented with active learning strategies, seminars and audiovisual meterial.
