Syllabus
Prerequisites: An intermediate level of proficiency in English is desirable.
Target skills and knowledge: By the end of the course students should be able to:
- use Legal English confidently and competently and make appropriate choices in register, based on the knowledge of collocations and specific lexis acquired over the course;
- write articulate and accurate legal letters in English, with appropriate layout.
Examination methods: A 20-minute oral exam, in English, on topics discussed in class.
Assessment criteria: Students are expected to:
- respond critically to a variety of legal texts analysed during the course;
- use appropriate English legal terminology to transmit information in a clear and concise manner.

Students attending lectures must present, in English (as an individual or part of a group), a legal topic of their choice, previously agreed with the course teacher and supported, if desired, by Power Point slides.
Course unit contents: The course gives participants the opportunity to expand and activate their legal vocabulary in English and to increase their fluency and confidence in using English in academic and legal contexts. A variety of legal topics and concepts are used in the course as vehicles to explore Legal English. Language practice activities include listening to talks, courtroom role-plays, problem solving discussions and formal letter writing exercises. An essential component of the course is learning to produce and deliver an effective oral presentation of a legal topic.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Traditional lectures, teacher-led discussions and classroom activities - the course is held entirely in English and students are expected to take an active part in the lectures.
Additional notes about suggested reading: RECOMMENDED COURSE MATERIAL FOR NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS:
