Prerequisites: The field belongs to political science. Thus it requires knowledge of basic concepts and major approaches of political science and history of international relations.
Target skills and knowledge: By passing the exam the student will have acquired:
1. the knowledge (a) of the theories of international relations; (b) of the processes of structural change that pervade the system of international politics and their impact on the behavior of state and non-state actors; (c) of the principles, objectives and decision-making processes of foreign policy; (e) of the collective security system established by the UN Charter; (f) of the institutional way to peace.
2. Analytical opportunities to know and assess with criticism the increasing interpenetration of internal-external variables, and the strategies envisaged as likely to develop processes, structures and institutions of (good) global governance at various levels.
3. Ability to analyze the political agenda in a perspective of human-centric change of the international relations guided by the human rights paradigm.
With reference to the autonomy of judgment and communication skills, the student will be able to critically interpret data and relevant facts of international politics, as well as to mature and express scientifically and ethically founded judgments.
Examination methods: The verification of the knowledge and skills expected will be carried out with a written exam consisting of 3 open questions on the topics covered by the course. The exam duration is 90 minutes.
Assessment criteria: Score will be from 18 to 30.
Students shall show to manage the basic information relating to theories of international relations, international processes of structural change, international system, intergovernmental and non-governmental actors, foreign policy, international security, conflict, negotiate and to integration; ability to analyse and critically approach issues dealing with international politics; linguistic competence with regard to international relations language.
Course unit contents: The course provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the study of the international political system. It introduces the main theoretical approaches which help to explain the behavior of state and non-state actors in the international system - realism, idealism and globalism - as well as some new theoretical perspectives such as feminism and postmodernism, global governance, sustainable statehood and international democracy. In particular the course will address the main processes of structural change (global interdependence, internationalisation of human rights, etc..), and the physiologic dynamics of the international system: conflict, negotiation, cooperation and integration. The typology of actors which are relevant for international politics will include state actors, intergovernmental organisations, supranational institutions, non-governmental organisations. Special attention will be devoted to the decision making process of foreign policy.
The course will address some issues that are currently debated among scholars of international relations, such us the so-called international intervention, the system of collective security and the use of force, the UN reform, the transition to a new world order.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Topics of the course will be addressed mainly through frontal lessons. Nevertheless, seminars with scholars on some specific topics will be scheduled and, on voluntary basis, students will be given the chance to work out a short presentation dealing with a programme related topic.
At the beginning of the course the teacher will propose to the students working groups, seminars, and role play. Through the moodle platform, students can download slides, documents of international organizations, and any other material presented during the course.
