Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of ancient, medieval and modern history and philosophy. Basic knowledge of main philosophical and political currents of the ancient and modern ages.
Target skills and knowledge: By doing this exam, students will acquire the following knowledges: 1. vocabulary of history of political thought,
2 basic knowledge of the main authors and themes of the course, 3 their historical and political context , 4 acquisition of political and philosophical concepts of each author or theme, 5 analytical ability to critically understand contemporary political thought.
Examination methods: Written exam with open-ended questions. Foreign students will be allowed to do the exam in english. The exam will last 90 minutes. There will be three open questions requiring an open-ended answer and one requiring a shorter answer.
Assessment criteria: During the exam, students should show to have understood main issues of the programme. Specifically: 1. knowledge of the most important authors and themes of the course, 2. the historical and political context, 3. understanding of the key philosophical and political concepts of each author and topic. To pass the exam students must answer at least two of the first three questions.
Course unit contents: ATTENDING STUDENTS:
The course will be divided into two parts. The first one will focus on the historical development of political thought from Ancient Times to the second half of the Nineteenth Century AD., referring to the following authors and themes: Plato; Aristotle; St. Thomas Aquinas; Marsilio of Padua; Niccolò Machiavelli; Thomas Hobbes; John Locke; Benjamin Constant; Alexis de Tocqueville; Pierre-Joseph Proudhon; Karl Marx.
The second part of the course will focus on the political thought of European Enlightenment and on the emergence of concepts of secularism, religious tolerance and liberty referring to the following authors: John Locke, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Cesare Beccaria, Mary Wollstonecraft.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS:
The historical development of political thought from the Fourth century BC to the second half of the Nineteenth Century AD., in reference to the following authors and themes: Plato; Aristotle; St. Thomas Aquinas; Marsilio of Padua; Machiavelli; Utopian thought; Hobbes and absolutism; Locke and the origins of liberalism; Rousseau and democracy; the Enlightenment; the American Revolution; the French Revolution; Constant and modern liberty; Tocqueville; Proudhon: socialism and anarchism; Marx and communism.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will be carried on in lecture form. Specialized lectures and seminars with professors on specific topics will be held. Students can find teaching materials on the moodle platform.
