Syllabus
Prerequisites: Students must understand the principles of microeconomics. In particular, they should be confident with the concepts of utility and production function; more in general, the knowledge of consumption and the firm's theory is required. Basic mathematical and statistical notions are also necessary. Finally, students must understand differential algebra and present value formulas.
Target skills and knowledge: The purpose of this unit is to provide a basic knowledge of macroeconomics. The main topics will refer to real and financial markets functioning as well as their interactions in short- and in the long-run. Besides, we will also explore the effects of international trade openness. Finally, we will ask students to develop critical thinking on the current macroeconomic issues.
Examination methods: Written exam.
Assessment criteria: The final score will be the result of the written examination.
Course unit contents: 1. Economics in the short-run. We analyze the goods market, financial markets, and their interaction in the IS-LM model.
2. The medium-run. We study the labor market and the relations linking unemployment, inflation, production and money growth.
3. The long-run. We investigate the determinants of long-term growth.
4. The role of expectations. We consider the role played by expectations in determining macroeconomic outcomes and their consequences for economic policies.
5. Open economy. We introduce the concept of the exchange rate, analyzing the differences and the effects of different exchange rate regimes.
6. We discuss the limitations of economic policy.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Front lecturing.
