Target skills and knowledge:

The course has the aim to provide a basic knowledge in calculus, biostatistics, probability and physics applied to biological sciences. The students will be able to carry out a statistical test on normally distributed variables, to understand the results of a scientific experiment with the support of the statistical analysis. They should be able to apply the basic concepts of probability determination. 
Examination methods:

The exam consists of two consecutive written tests. The first one for the PhysicsCalculus, and the second for the Biostatistics.
Both tests require the solution of exercises. The final mark will be computed as the weighted average, with respect to CFU, of the two tests.
The time available to accomplish each test is 90 minutes for each. 
Assessment criteria:

The criteria for a positive assessment are correctness, accuracy and completeness of the solutions of the exercises. Moreover, the ability to implement a statistical analysis procedure will be evaluated. 
Course unit contents:

Calculus and physics (6 ECTS 50 hours).
Calculus (20 hours): Functions and their graphs. The elementary functions (polynomials, power, exponential, logarithmic, trigonometric). Limits. The limit of the sum, product, quotient and composed of two functions. Derivative and their geometrical meaning. Derivatives of elementary functions. Derivation rules. Growth and descrescenza, maximum and minimum. The concept of integral
Physics (30 hours): Work. Kinetic and potential energy. Energy conservation. Thermodynamics. Pressure, temperature, heat. Temperature scales. The principles of thermodynamics. Gas laws. Transformations isotherms, isobars, adiabatic. Work done by an expanding gas. Statics and dynamics of fluids. Principles of spectroscopy. Electrostatic potential.
Biostatistics (4 ECTS  44 hrs)
Descriptive statistic (6 hrs of class lessons): general concepts of biostatistics; measures of position and variation; sampling methodologies; normal distribution of population and selection index; basic of epidemiology.
Inferential statistics (12 hrs of class lessons): statistical test; goodnessoffit test (ChiSquare test); KruskalWallis non parametric test; basic of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA); correlation and regression between two continuous variables.
Probability (6 hrs of class lessons): probability and rules about probabilities; simple and compound probability; probability and combinations; binomial and Poisson distributions.
Practical class sessions (10 hrs): carrying out statistical exercises; further carrying out of optional statistical exercises to strengthen the preparation of students with didactic gaps (10 ore). 
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Calculus and Physics (FIS / 07; 6 ECTS)
Lectures (40 hours) and exercises (10 hours) based on exercises.
Biostatistics (MAT/06; 4 ECTS) 
The teaching activity are dived into:
i. 24 hrs of class lessons will exploit blackboard procedures and supported by powerpoint presentation (available to students) and video (Kaltura and studio shots);
ii. 20 hrs of class practical sessions: 10 hrs of carrying out exnovo exercises and correction of assigned exercises; 10 optional hrs of carrying out exercices to support statistical tests and probability determination for students lacking in inferential statistics.
