Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Prerequisites: None
Target skills and knowledge: Analyze, understand and apply the relevant laws on the welfare of wild and laboratory animals.
Learn and develop skills to understand and discuss the ethical dimensions of animal care and welfare in all different fields.

Mod. A - Bioethics:
Students will develop moral reasoning abilities and will learn about ethical questions specific to dealing with animals, moral concepts of animal care and welfare, societal frames and ethical tools that can be useful in addressing practical ethical questions with animals. Specifically they will learn:
1. To understand the nature of the ethical discussion
2. To develop skills in critical thinking and decision making in ethics
3. To understand the ethical dimensions of dealing with animal care and welfare issues in professional life
4. To Use the knowledge and tools gained to deal with ethical questions both on a theoretical and a practical level

Mod. B - Relevant legislation and animal protection:
Analysis and interpretation of the relevant laws on the welfare of wild and laboratory animals.
Examination methods: The exam will consist of a written test based on open answers, case studies discussion and oral examination.

Mod. A - Bioethics:
Assessment of performance includes group discussion and final individual oral examination.

During the course students have the possibility to do a partial written test on:
• Ethical theories and Moral values on Animal Treatment
• Human-animal bond and animals in society

Students who decide not to participate in the partial test will be able to support the arguments of the partial test in the final oral examination.

Mod. B - Relevant legislation and animal protection:
Final written examination on Basic legislation, Wild animals
and Laboratory animals.

During the course the students have the possibility to do
three partial tests:
- First partial test on Basic legislation,
- Second partial test on Wild animals,
- Third partial test, which coincides with the final examination,
on Laboratory animals.

Students who decide not to participate in the first and second
partial tests will be able to support the arguments of the three
partial tests in the final examination.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on the basis of the acquired knowledge in relation to his ability to use and present the concepts and topics learned during the course.
The student is expected to gain experience in legislation data analysis and to deal with ethical questions both on a theoretical and a practical level.

Mod. A - Bioethics:
It will be evaluated if the student is able:

1. to demonstrate theoretical knowledge
2. to use the knowledge and tools gained both on a theoretical and a practical level
3. to communicate the skills gained in critical thinking and decision making
The total score (maximum 30 points) is based on:

- 30% partial test
- 20% group discussion
- 50% oral exam
The scores both of the partial test and group discussion will be considered valid until the second appeal of September.

Mod. B - Relevant legislation and animal protection:
The TOTAL SCORE (maximum 30 points) is based on:

1) 1. N. 5 total open questions about the Course unit contents
2) developed during the frontal lectures:
- n. 1 question on the PART n. 1 (Basic legislation),
- - n. 2 questions on the PART n. 2 (Wild animals),
- Fi - n. 2 questions on the PART n. 3 (Laboratory animals).
For each correct answer is given a maximum score of 5 points.

2. The short thesis elaborated during the Course practical lectures, for which a maximum score of 5 points is provided.

The scores both of the five questions on the three Parts and the short thesis will be considered valid until the second appeal of September.

The examination will cover theoretical learning objectives.
Student is expected to gain experience in legal acts analysis and to
discuss principles presented in lecture sessions.
Evaluation criteria include degree of knowledge of acquired
information and use of appropriate technical language.

Specific characteristics of the Module

Course unit contents: The course frontal lectures cover:
PART n. 1 = Basic principles of legislation which include:
Institutions and international organization regarding the protection of animals;
The composition of the act;
- The hierarchy of laws;
- The meaning of:
International Convention, EU Regulation and EU Directive;
Law, Legislative Decree and Ministerial Decree;
Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU);
Official Gazette of the Italian Republic.

PART n. 2: Analysis and interpretation of the relevant and animal protection on the wild animals which include:
Community and national law concerning the CITES, zoos, circuses,
animals’ possession, handling and transport, the use of drugs especially pain relief, waste disposal.

PART n. 3: Analysis and interpretation of the relevant legislation and animal protection on the laboratory animals which include:
Directive 2010/63/EU of the European Parliament and of the
Council of 22 September 2010 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes;
Legislative Decree 4 march 2014, n. 26: Implementation of the Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes;
Community and national law concerning animals’ transport, the use of drugs especially pain relief, waste disposal.
The course practical lectures are based on a group work that involves both a group discussion and a final report (short thesis).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course includes 40 hours of frontal lectures, and 8 hours of practical lectures.

Practical activities are based on participative interaction with group discussion about the recommendations of different Institutions and International Organizations regarding the
protection of wild and laboratory animals.
