Common characteristics of the Integrated Course unit

Specific characteristics of the Module

Course unit contents: At the end of the course, the students should be able to classify trees and shrubs growing in Italian and European forests/green areas. They will memorize the name of the trees and shrubs encountered during the outdoor lessons (quite all the lessons). The ecological frame (climate, substrate) of Alpine and Apennine species will also be circumscribed, with specific attention to soil and humus forms references. Particular emphasis is given to groups of tree species as a component of the main Italian forest ecosystems. Students will be instructed about how to use their cellphone for classifying the tree species and determining their natural habitat.
By teaching to recognize the trees and their ecological needs, the course prepares students to know how to effectively respond to the following Objectives of the National Strategy Analysis for Sustainable Development:
Goal 2. End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture (targets: 2,4 e 2,5);
Goal 11. 
Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe and sustainable(targets: 4, 6, 7, 11a, 11b);
Goal 12. 
Ensuring sustainable consumption and production methods (targets: 2, 8, 12b);
Goal 13 Take urgent measures to fight against climate change and its consequences (targets: 1, 2, 3, 13b);
Goal 15 Protecting, restoring and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable management of forests, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation and halting the loss of biodiversity (targets: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The first lesson takes place in a classroom, for scheduling the calendar of all the other outdoor lessons; PDF version of indoor lessons and calendar of outdoor training, in Moodle. Spring outdoor training (in collaboration with Alan Crivellaro and Enrico Marcolin, respectively experts of trees morphology and ecology, in San Vito di Cadore, Dolomites, for the observation of plants in Winter appearance, focusing on buds, bark, branching system...) and in May and June (in collaboration with Michele Scotton, professor of Systematic Botany, in Somadida, Auronzo, Dolomites, focusing on Summer features of leaves, flowers, fruits...). Current excursions in parks and gardens of the de city of Padua (Orto Botanico, Arena, Iris, Treves, Lungoargine) with turning groups of 30 students. Calendar and visited parks in Moodle.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Outdoor training is programmed during the first lesson, agreed with the students and considering particular exigences (avoiding superposition of other courses). Visited parks and calendar are published in Moodle. The list of species to be known for validating the final test (annually adjusted following the species encountered during the outdoor training) is available in Moodle two weeks before the date of the first test. Two tests, outdistanced 2 weeks, are programmed at the beginning of the course; a third test takes place in September and a last (in two dates) in February of the following year.

Complementary information that could be required for a greater mark:
1. Natural evolution (Charles Darwin and current concept); world forests (general distribution and main biomes) and history of the European forests. 2. Basics of forest soil ecology. 3. Basics of forest typology (phytosociology, climatology, and pedology). 4. Evolution in plant taxonomy and specific morphological characters of trees species. 5. Autoecology of Alpine forest trees species, the concept of tree-soil coevolution.
