Prerequisites: Mathematics, especially functions, vector computation, derivatives and integrals. Preliminary examination: Mathematics
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of some of the fundamental laws of Physics, and some of those used in disciplinary area. Ability to deal with Physics problems.
Examination methods: To be defined
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the right apllication of the laws of Physics in the proposed exercises solution.
Course unit contents: 1st credit: Physical units, system of measurement, dimensional analysis. Kinematics.
2nd credit: Reference systems. Vector units. Vector calculus recalls. Motion in 2 and 3 dimensions.
3rd credit: Material point dynamics: the three Newton laws. Forces: statycal and dynamical friction, elastic force. Circular motion. Centripetal force. Simple harmonic motion. Work.
4th credit: Kinetic energy theorem. Conservative and non conservative forces. Potential Energy. Energy conservation. Material point statics. Conservation laws for energy and momentum. Fluids: scalar and vector fields. Pascal and Stevino laws. Archimedes principle . Motion of fluids. Bernoulli theorem.
5th credit: Surface tension. Electrology: electrostatic forces. Field and potential. Gauss theorem. Charged conductors in electrostatic equilibrium.
Capacity. Capacitors in series and in parallel. Energy density of an electric field. Electric current. Ohm's Law, resistence in series and in parallel, generators, e.m.f., Joule effect.
6th credit: Magnetic field. Gauss theorem for B. Lorentz force. Charged particle motion in a magnetic field. Forces between electrical circuits. Ampere Law. Magnetic field produced by a wire and by a solenoid. Faraday law for electromagnetic induction. Magnetic energy and magnetic density. Elements of Kinetic Gas Theory. Elements of Optics and waves.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Oral lectures using both the blackboard and slides projections will be adopted. Several Physics problems, similar to those of the final exam, will be solved in class.
