Syllabus
Prerequisites: A sufficient knowledge of both oral and written French; the course is taught in French.
Target skills and knowledge: An overview of the Francophonie from both diachronic and synchronic perspectives, the knowledge of some literary examples, the ability to conduct a critical reflection on the themes of the course starting from the analysis of the texts.
Examination methods: Oral examination. It is possible to write a personal essay in French on a question concerning one aspect of the course.
The last part of the course gives students the possibility to present a personal analysis in the classroom.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge appropriation, the ability to analyse texts, the quality of argumentation and of personal in-depth analysis.
Course unit contents: 1) Perspectives on the Francophonie
2) “Ancorages, searches and wandering”
Starting from an introduction to the Francophonie and the different approaches to French literatures, the course will approach the question of the connections between places and characters in two Caribbean authors: Raphaël Confiant and Maryse Condé. A particular attention will be paid to the appropriation and the fictionalisation of the history of extraordinary female characters in different historical and geographical contexts which are characterised by nomadism and violence.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Course in French comporting text analysis, critical perspectives, thematic studies.
