Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic notions in general linguistics and historical linguistics.
Target skills and knowledge: Referential, structural and cognitive semantics.
Figures of speech as semantic-conceptual relations processes.
The lexicon in a diachronic perspective (history and etymology of the word).
Jargon formations, onomastics and toponymy.
The vocabulary and language disorders (aphasia).
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the student's preparation will be based on the degree of understanding of the topics covered in the course, clear reasoning and the skill to find correlations on given themes.
Course unit contents: The main currents of thought, which have contributed to the birth and development of linguistic semantics in the twentieth century, will be explored as compared to the philosophy of language and logic. The advent of structuralism and its further developments including the recent contribution of cognitive science will be central themes of analysis. As for the lexicon, methods of historical-etymological and functional-synchronic analysis will be proposed by taking into particular consideration technical vocabulary, jargon, onomastics and toponymy in its specificity
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of given lectures, with the possibility to cover additional topics chosen by the students. Alongside the basic readings, an annotated bibliography will be provided. The use of dictionaries or online database is recommended for specialized projects on lexicon.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Further suggested reading:
Scalise,S.,Bisetto, A., La struttura delle parole, Bologna, Il Mulino 2008;
Faschilli, C.,Come comprendiamo le parole, Milano,Mondadori 2014.
As for the lexicon of jargon, onomastics and toponymy, it is recommended to study class notes or an additional bibliography to be agreed.
Other bibliographic suggestions will be given during the course.
