Syllabus
Prerequisites: The knowledge of Arabic is not required.
Target skills and knowledge: The aims are three:
1) the knowledge of the structure of the Arabic language (linguistic historical context of formation; phonology, reading and writing, transliteration systems, morphology of the noun and the verb up to the derived forms of the regular verb).
2) the knowledge of the translation movement from Greek into Arabic of ancient and late ancient secular knowledge which developed in the 'Abbāsid Baghdad from the 8th century.
3) the analysis and the understanding of some Arabic documents on the translation movement from Greek into Arabic of ancient and late ancient secular knowledge in Italian translation.
Examination methods: The exam consists of a written test and an oral interview.

Arabic language: the knowledge of the syntactic-grammatical structures of the Arabic language will be verified in a written test. The test will take an hour and a half. It will consists of exercises similar to those provided to the students as exercises during the lessons.

Translation movement from Greek into Arabic: the individual oral interview will last about 30 (thirty) minutes. The questions will verify the knowledge of the translation movement from Greek into Arabic addressed during the course.
Assessment criteria: The mark will express the weighted average of the two partial tests (written and oral). We will evaluate:
- grammatical and syntactic correctness in the written test;
- completeness of knowledge, accuracy of conceptual analysis, correct terminology, and construction of a relevant and clear personal critical discourse in the oral interview.
Course unit contents: Arabic language 48 hours:

(1) historical linguistic framework of the formation of the Arabic language;
(2) phonetics of the Arabic language,
(3) reading and writing of the Arabic language,
(4) transliteration systems,
(5) morphology of the name, article and nominal declination
(6) nominal propositions
(7) construct state
(8) gender of nouns
(9) plural and dual
(10) personal pronouns
(11) demonstrative pronouns and adjectives
(12) relative and interrogative pronouns
(13) pronominal pronouns and adjectives
(14) comparative and superlative adjectives
(15) numerals
(16) verb: perfect
(17) verb:indicative imperfect, conjunctive mode, conditional-iussive mode
(18) kāna and its sisters
(19) imperative, vocative, participles and infinities

Translation movement from Greek into Arabic 21 hours:

(1) social phenomenon in its specific historical-cultural context.
(2) prosopography of its protagonists: patrons, translators and experts in the field of philosophy, medicine and science.
(3) centers for processing and disseminating texts in translation.
(4) peculiar aspects of the Arabic reception of ancient and late ancient Greek thought: the theoretical justification of the use of knowledge extraneous to the Koranic revelation, the critical rethinking of texts in translation, the elaboration of new theories, the value attributed to direct observation of a certain phenomenon under examination, the construction of tools, the importance of the applicative implications of theoretical research, the satisfaction of practical needs.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Part of lectures will be devoted to the learning of Arabic language and part to a historical-conceptual analysis of the translation movement. 48 (equivalent to 3 credits) hours of Arabic language will be carried in the form of workshops and it will include lectures, exercises, and the correction of the exercises which will be assigned at home for the consolidation of learning. 21 hours of lectures will be devoted to the translation movement from Greek into Arabic aiming at involving the students and stimulating the discussion. The lessons will include the reading and analysis of documents related to the translation movement in Italian translation.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The bibliographical references of the exam, the exercises, text and powerpoints presented in class will be available on the course's moodle page. Non-attending students have to contact the professor to agree on the exam program.
