Prerequisites: Consolidated knowledge corresponding to C1+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, related to:
1. phonology, phonetics, morphology and syntax of the Portuguese language, in both European and Brazilian Portuguese Standards;
2. translation, from Portuguese into Italian and from Italian into Portuguese, performed with printed material and computer tools tailored to different text types examined in previous courses.
Target skills and knowledge: At the conclusion of the Master's Degree Course, after a regular attendance of Portuguese theory and language practice classes of both Standards, students’ knowledge and skills will be conformed to C1 + / C2 level, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. They will be able to perform independently in translations and interpretations of literary texts, as well as in analyses and productions of editorial paratexts.
Examination methods: Overcoming the written and oral tests of language practice is essential to access the theory exam, which consists of examining the Italian translations of passages assigned during the courses and taken from «Os Sertões» by Euclides da Cunha, made by the examinee.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will focus on the analysis of the quality of the translations made by students in ongoing evaluations. Lexical, syntactical, stylistic, phraseology choices will be examined, as well as any possible paratext proposal. Adequate prototext translating choices as well as the mastery of professional skills to achieve appropriate paratexts will have to emerge.
Course unit contents: According to some well-known theories related to translation, the objective of the present programme – "Translating into Italian «Os Sertões» by Euclides da Cunha" – is to examine in depth the translation process complexities which are present in the various interwoven issues in one of the most important works of the Brazilian cultural history: geographical, social, political, anthropological, military, literary, religious issues, etc. The translation approach will allow the student to get to know the various lexical and terminological segments and the syntactic complexity of Euclides da Cunha’s masterpiece, published in the early years of the Republic, a crucial moment in contemporary Brazilian history.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: In parallel to the lectures (Professor S. Bagno), planned for the first semester, there will be language practice activities, both in the first and in the second semester, held by Dr. J. Maximino (ES) and Dr. B. Ferrini (BS).

By reflecting on the most significant lexical, semantic, syntactic, stylistic aspects, etc. of Euclides da Cunha’s masterpiece, the student will be guided to make translation choices of the studied texts, as well as in paratext drafting tailored to Italian-speaking readers.

Although not required to attend the language practice activities, students of Portuguese mother tongue must take the exam in its entirety.
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the courses accurate indications will be given about bibliography and further study material will be provided through the Moodle e-learning platform.
