Prerequisites: The course does not require specific prerequisites in addition to the standard linguistic competences obtained during the postgraduate programmes providing access to the master’s programmes in which this course is included.
Target skills and knowledge: Students shall:
-Familiarize with the quantitative and qualitative tools to analyse and describe newspaper articles:
- Learn to identify the specific traits of the language of the press in different time periods and publication types (mainly dailies);
- Learn to use the competences and skills they have acquired on new texts (mostly during assignments for small groups of students from different courses of studies).
Examination methods: Final exam is oral. Students who cannot attend the course will be tested on the contents of the books included in the relevant bibliography (liable to small changes that will be notified on the teacher’s web page).
Students attending at least 30 hours in class shall be tested on the topics illustrated during the course. The materials used in class shall be made available on the web page of the course.
Assessment criteria: Students shall be assessed according to the analytical skills and knowledge tested during the oral exam. In the case of students who attended the course, their participation in class activities and discussions shall also be considered in their final mark.
Course unit contents: The course will deal with the following topics:
1) Basic traits of the language of the press;
2) Traits distinguishing the language of the press according to the time period and publication type (national newspapers vs. local newspapers; hard paper publications vs. online publications);
3) Language features of articles originally written in Italian and translated into Italian from other languages.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course mainly includes lectures complemented by group activities conducted by the students.

Students are invited to attend the course pursuant to article 28, heading 1 of the “Regolamento carriere studenti”, laying down that all students enjoy the right/duty to attend courses and actively participate in all educational activities scheduled by the Course of studies in which they have enrolled according to the provisions of the Didactic regulations of the course of studies.
