Prerequisites: Recommended knowledge of Classical Archeology, Late Roman and Early Byzantine History
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide:
1) general knowledge of Christian Archaeology
2) knowledge of methodological and critical tools for the study of Christian Archaeology
3) ability to define and classify architecture, sculpture, decoration, iconography, symbology of Christian Archaeological Contexts
Examination methods: Oral exam with discussion on the topics of the course; available printed and digital images.

Assessment criteria: Evaluation
1) knowledge of the topics of the course
2) acquisition of the proposed methods
3) logical-argumentative skills, ability to synthesize and analyze content
4) knowledge of specific nomenclature
Course unit contents: The course will focus on the following topics:
1. Christian Archaeology. Definition and history of studies
2. Architecture, architectural sculpture, liturgical furniture
3. Excavations and research in the Christian Near East
4. Painting and mosaic decoration
5. Christian Iconography and Symbology
6. Sumptuary arts
7. Shipwrecks and nautical archaeology of the Christian period
8. Literary sources for the study of Christian Archaeology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures with power point, video, report on studied sites, visits to archaeological sites and monuments; participation in congresses and seminars. Attendance is strongly recommended.
Students are invited to attend LAS lessons - Laboratory of Underwater Archaeology (seminar) and the Course of underwater archeology (non-compulsory activities).
Additional notes about suggested reading: 1. Bibliography for the exam, texts and powerpoints presented in class will be available on the Moodle page of the Course.
2. On the Course Moodle page, further bibliography, useful for deepen knowledge of some topics, will be loaded on a dedicated directory
