Prerequisites:
|
Duration: from October to January.
Good competence in French language and culture. |
Target skills and knowledge:
|
The student will be introduced to the main problems of translation and to its different theories which will be presented according to their fundamental interrelationship (theoretical translation science and applied translation science).
He/she will be able to assess texts on the basis of their type and function in order to adopt adequate translation strategies. He/she will become aware of all translation operations made in harmony with the strategy that has been chosen. He/she will be able to gather information in order to solve translation problems. |
Examination methods:
|
A written test will check the student's skills. Further information will be given in class. |
Assessment criteria:
|
Upon a theoretical and methodological level, the teacher will take into account the adequacy and pertinence of what will be exposed, whereas upon an applied level the translated text will be assessed according to the criteria of formal and semantic precision and of the conformity with the reader profile of the target text. |
Course unit contents:
|
All different approaches to translation will be described and explained by taking into account their specificity and complementarity.
Translation theories will be supported by linguistic remarks. Upon an applied level, the teacher will focus on the discourse approach by analysing the text type (macrostructure and microstructure), its function and communicative goals for a better comprehension and translation of the source text. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods:
|
Translation studies will be properly illustrated with examples; each theoretical session will be accompanied by lab activities. |
Additional notes about suggested reading:
|
Besides bibliographic references, which represent a sound basis for successful learning, a detailed list of preliminary reading prior to each section of the course and of specialised literature will be accessible on the online platform (Moodle).
Materials will be uploaded in digital format. |
