Syllabus
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge is required. All lessons will be in Spanish.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims at introducing students to the critical reading of the most significant texts by that group of poets which, in Spain, between the Twenties and the Thirties of the XX century, collected the european avant-garde’s iconoclastic itchings to create a poetry made up of an authentic synthesis of tradition and modernity and thus producing one of the most interesting poetical seasons of the past century. What will therefore be studied is the works by the so-called “generation of ‘27”, from Guillén to Aleixandre, from Alberti to Salinas and with a special regard for Federico García Lorca and his personal “surrealist” vein, which will be contextualized within a wide-ranging reflection also on painting and cinema in the attempt to evaluate the dialogue which his poetry maintains with the works by Salvador Dalì and Luis Buñuel.
It will be assessed the students’ skills in critically interpreting the avant-garde poetical text and in moving properly within Lorca’s imaginative system.
Examination methods: The exam will be oral and it will consist in a discussion on one or more of the topics dealt with during the lessons. Specifically, students will be required to critically elaborate those same topics, to apply them to the texts as well as to use them in offering their own interpretation of the texts together with their personal analytical observations.
Assessment criteria: What will be assessed:
1) the knowledge of the topics dealt with during the course;
2) the ability to apply that knowledge autonomously and informedly;
3) logical and argumentative skills, that is the relavance of answers to questions;
4) the ability to “build a personal critical discourse” that should be clear, incisive and original.
Course unit contents: 1) Spanish avant-garde’s theory and practice.
In the first part of the course the manifestos and poetics of the Spanish avant-garde (creacionismo, ultraismo, pure poetry, “dehumanized” art, etc.) will be studied, establishing a dialogue with the European context. Then the course will proceed with the anthological reading of the most important collections by the poets of the ’27, trying to trace the key feature of their avant-gardist writing. Special attention will be devoted to the phenomenon of Surrealism’s reception in Spain and to the complex and new version of it given by the so-called “Andalusian poets”.

Reference book:
- Arturo Ramoneda (ed.), Antología poética de la generación del ’27, Castalia didáctica, 2011.

2) The martyrological iconography in Lorca’s poetry.
The second part of the course will be entirely devoted to the reading of the poetical works by Federico García Lorca, to the individuation of that particular “impossible balance” which, from the belated modernism of “Libro de poemas” through the “deep” folklore of “Romancero gitano” to the dramatic surrealism of “Poeta en Nueva York”, sustains the sense of his research, dramatically suspended between the seduction of the vanishing image and the evidence of the persisting sense. The representation of martyrdom, which is a recurrent obsession, will be studied as the privileged workshop, in terms of thought and experimentation, of this tension underlying, both humanly and poetically, the totality of his writing.

Reference books:

- Federico García Lorca, Tutte le poesie, Garzanti, 2012, 2 voll.
- Federico García Lorca, Así que pasen cinco años
- Federico García Lorca, El público
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Taught classes, which will consitute the prevailing teaching method, will always aim at involving students and at stimulating discussion. Besides, there will be a final seminar part, in which students will be asked to prepare a presentation on the assigned texts, addressing them as subjects of personal analytical reflections. The results will be assessed as an integral part of the exam.
Attendance is highly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The critical bibliography, which will serve as an outline to the indications presented during the lessons, will be available on the course’s moodle page.
Non-attending students are recommended to read the book by CB Morris and the book by Eutimio Martín.
