Syllabus
Prerequisites: It is preferable to have some basic knowledge of late-ancient, medieval and Arabic medieval philosophy. In this last field the professor is at disposal of the students to supply bibliographical indications.
Target skills and knowledge: The aims of the course are the following:
(1) the knowledge of the the historical, political and social context of the philosophical tradition of the Muslim West;
(2) the knowledge of Averroes' intellectual biography, production and philosophical agenda;
(3) the analysis in detail of the the years 1179-1180 of Averroes'production that he dedicated to focusing on the question of the legitimacy of philosophy, in particular Aristotelian philosophy, in Islam;
(4) the reading and critical analysis of two of the three texts of the period 1179-1180: the Decisive Treatise on the Agreement of Religion with Philosophy and some parts of the Incoherence of the Incoherence of the Philosophers.
Examination methods: The exam consists of an interview on several topics addressed during the lessons. The individual interview will last about 30 (thirty) minutes. The questions will verify the knowledge of the author and the treatises addressed during the course.
Assessment criteria: The mark will express the level of achievement of the aims (see the section "Knowledge and skills to be acquired"). The following abilities will be assessed: completeness of knowledge, accuracy of conceptual analysis, correct terminology and construction of a relevant and clear personal critical discourse.
Course unit contents: The lessons will be divided according to the following teaching units:

(1) The historical, political and social contexts of Muslim Spain between the 8th and 12th centuries.
(2) The Andalusian philosophical tradition and Ibn Tufayl (1105-1185).
(3) Averroes' intellectual biography (1126-1198).
(4) Composition and agenda of the corpus averroicum
(6) Averroes' investigation of the soul and the cosmos.
(7) Averroes' metaphysics
(9) The years 1179-1180 dedicated to the question of the legitimacy of philosophy, in particular Aristotelian philosophy, in Islam.
(10) The critical reading of the Decisive Treatise and its historiographical interpretations.
(11) The critical reading of some Averroes' arguments against al-Ghazali in the Incoherence of the Incoherence of the Philosophers.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The predominant teaching method will be lectures which will try to engage students and stimulate discussion. The lessons will include the reading and the analysis of some significant pages of Averroes' treatises under discussion. Attendance is strongly recommended.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The bibliographical references of the exam, texts and powerpoints presented in class will be available on the course's moodle page. Non-attending students have to contact the professor to agree on the exam program.
