PROBABILITY THEORY
STATISTICAL MODELS FOR SOCIAL DATA
Target skills and knowledge: Students are expected on one hand to learn some aspects of demographic analysis not considered in other course units (sequence analysis, agent-based models, composite indices), on the other hand to get the ability of linking substantive issues and statistical methods.
Examination methods: Oral exam. During the lectures, students are assigned to individual or group homeworks, which evaluation will affect the final grade
Course unit contents: Topic 1: Second demographic transition and de-standardisation of life courses
Method: Sequence analysis

Topic 2: Measuring complex phenomena
Method: Synthetic Indicators and multi-criteria analysis

Topic 3: Social Interaction and fertility
Method: Agent-Based models
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course unit is made of three modules. In each of them, a topic related to demographic and social phenomena and a relevant method will be presented. At the end of the module a (individual or group) homework will be assigned to students in which a real problem will be considered and analysed by students, who will expose their analysis.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Articles concerning the topic and the method considered will be provided by the teacher.
