Prerequisites: There are no specific prerequisites.
Target skills and knowledge: The course allows to acquire some theoretical knowledge, research methods and innovative techniques to study, design and evaluate human-computer interaction (HCI). The targeted knowledge is such that makes the resulting HCI effective and efficient, and the user experience simple, pleasant and overall satisfactory. The skills acquired will pertain to the domain of HCI and cognitive ergonomics; more specifically:

- user-centered design;
- basic principles of cognitive ergonomics;
- user experience evaluation and products usability;
- visual communication and data visualization;
- accessibility and universal design (e.g. design for older adults)
- social computing and social ergonomics.
Examination methods: The examination will be in written modality (5 questions).
Assessment criteria: - The first open question evaluates the student's ability of using the methods and techniques acquired during the course to solve specific design or evaluation cases regarding an interactive system or its interface. 12/30
- The second open question evaluates the ability to briefly present theories and methods learned in class or from the textbook. 9/30
- The remaining questions will assess the acquisition of theoretical and methodological knowledge. These questions will need a very short answer. 3/30 each
Course unit contents: - Interaction design, models and users style. Paradigms and strategies for building interactive systems (Chapters 1, 2)
- Human limits and their implication for the design of technologies . Social Interaction - Emotional Interaction (Chapters 3, 4, 5)
- Interfaces (Chapter 6)
- Data and Evaluation; UX/usability: the lab and the real world; advanced techniques (eyes tracking, video analysis, EEG, EDA, T, HR-ECG and other bio-signals, etc (Chapters 7, 13, 14, 15 + materials)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Traditional and interactive lectures (student presentations, multimedia, online resources) on the theoretical aspects of the discipline will alternate with teaching labs to practice the methods and techniques described in the course. Individual and group activities based on the design and development of prototype interfaces and interactive systems will facilitate the acquisition of specific and practical skills.
Specific technical/programming skills are welcome yet not mandatory.
Additional notes about suggested reading: ATTENDING STUDENTS
Educational material will be made available during the lessons and on-line. The teacher is a big supporter of "taking notes" and "exploring on-line libraries". He strongly prefer very interactive students who actively participate to lessons. Students must study chapters 1,2,4,5, 6 and have to read chapters 7, 13,14,15 of the textbook edited by Helen Sharp, Jenny Preece and Yvonne Rogers suggested below. (5th edition is coming out and would be better, but the 4th will be also OK). Chapter 3 optional reading is strongly suggested for students arriving from Data Science and from Multimedia engineering.

Students will have to study chapters 1,2,4,5,7, 13,14,15 of the book suggested below. Chapter 3 reading is strongly suggested for students coming from Data Science or from Multimedia engineering.
