Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of some courses of the first semester (Applied geophysics, Micropaleontology, Applied geochemistry)
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to introduce students to the fundamental knowledge about the origin of sedimentary basins and the main methods to reconstruct the stratigraphy and depositional dynamics. Among them, a significant part of the course will concern seismic interpretation. Furthemore, some aspects related to hydrocarbon exploration will be detailed. In particular, the course will focus on the acquisition and modeling of quantitative methods for the study of thermal and burial history.
Examination methods: The exam is divided into two parts. Evaluation of the first one (chapters 1-7, see below) is provided by a written examination with open questions. Chapters 8-11 are evaluated through a practical test (i.e. interpretation of a seismic line). The student is asked to give a geological interpretation that includes the main deformation events and the type of sedimentary basin.
Assessment criteria: It will be evaluated the learning the contents of the course, also with reference to examples and key-histories. Interpretation of seismic line will be evaluated through a comparison with published
literature or according to the geological setting.
Course unit contents: 1) The foundations of sedimentary basins; classification and plate tectonics.
2) Basins due to lithospheric stretching: rifts and passive margins.
3) Basins due to lithospheric flexure: foredeep, foreland, buckling.
4) Dynamic topography.
5) Strike-slip and pull-apart basins.
6) Subsidence and thermal history.
7) Appication to petroleum industry.
8) Seismic reflection basics.
9) Geometric characterization of seismic reflectors and seismic facies; seismic surfaces; seismic sequences and units.
10) Seismic interpretation of rifting, passive margin and foreland settings.
11) Sequence stratigraphy applied to seismic interpretation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and work groups on case histories.
Geological interpetation of seismic lines is made through a practical approach. During the course, the student will work on seismic lines of increasing complexity, with the gradual addition of well and outcrop data, until a 3D interpretation.
