Syllabus
Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry courses of the 1st cycle Degree:

nomenclature of organic molecules, organic functional groups
electrofile and nucleofile
basicity and acidity
addition reactions (alkenes)
nucleophilic substitution (alcohols, halogenated compounds)
Electrophilic aromatic substitution (reactions of aromatic compounds)
Pericyclic reactions
Target skills and knowledge: Organic materials have a vast variety of functions and properties that can be tailored by controlling molecular structure. In this course molecular structure-properties/function relationship will be studied.
The aims of the course are:
1) familiarize the student with the structure of organic molecules commonly used in materials science.
2) familiarize the students with the chemistry of such molecules and give them the tools for their design and synthesis;
3) familiarize the students with the methods of characterization of such molecules and materials;
4) learn the structure-properties relationships
5) familiarize the student with the intermolecular forces important in organic bulk materials;
6) give the students an overview about the recent trends and applications of functional organic materials and about the working principle of the different devices.
Examination methods: Written exam.

Assessment criteria: Ability to explain the correlation between molecular structure and properties of functional materials. Ability to apply their knowledge of organic chemistry to the design and synthesis of organic molecules for materials science. Ability to explain how to assess the properties of the functional materials.
Course unit contents: 1. Carbon nanostructures: Synthesis, properties, characterization and applications of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene
2. Semiconducting organic polymers: synthesis, properties, characterization, electronic structure, charge generation and transport, bandgap engeneering
3. Small organic molecules for organic electronics
4. Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDS), organic solar cells (OSCs) and organic field effect transistors (OFET)
5. Supramolecular materials
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course consists of lectures, in-class assignments, group exercises, case studies (discussion of scientific literature). Teaching will be carried out using the blackboard and slides.
Additional notes about suggested reading: references from literature, pdf files of scientific papers and pdf files of lecture slides will be provided. In addition, for each topic a number of books available at the department's library will be indicated to the students.
