Brief description of the degree course
Characteristics and objectives
Aim of the Master (MSc) course in Materials Science aims at forming graduates with high-level competencies in the field of research and development of innovative functional materials. This is a strategic area of industrial innovation, which requires a strong interdisciplinary preparation, with a solid background in chemistry, physics and mathematics, and knowledge of the most recent developments in the scientific research.
Starting from the academic year 2018/2019 the programme will include two curricula:
i) Scienza dei Materiali
ii) Material Science
The latter is an international curriculum, offered within an exchange program with the Justus Liebig University of Giessen (Germany), and will allow students to obtain, in addition to the Italian Laurea Magistrale, the German title of Master of Science. A maximum number of 5 students per year, selected on the basis of their academic merits, can be admitted to the double degree program. They are expected to spend the second year at the partner University, where they will also prepare their master thesis.
Both curricula include a first set of compulsory courses, dealing with the application of physical and chemical concepts and methods to the study of material properties. Then, there are courses focusing on more specialized topics of materials science and technology (including nanomaterials).
Distinguishing characters of the MSc graduate are:
- the ability to link the properties and functions of materials to their microscopic structure, acquired through courses that integrate competencies of chemistry, physics and engineering;
- the experimental approach, developed also through the laboratory activity, where the student becomes acquainted with the most advanced chemical and physical and methodologies to prepare and characterize materials.
Through a personalized study plan, students can define their own training pathway, based on their cultural and professional interests, by selecting a number of elective courses, within a list of advanced courses offered by the degree program or among the courses available at University. The learning process is concluded by the final exam, in the form of an original experimental or theoretical activity, to be carried out at the University, in a research institution or at a company.

Occupational opportunities
An MSc graduate in Materials Science acquires an interdisciplinary preparation, suitable to carry out a research and development activity in high-tech companies, or to pursue doctoral studies, in Italy or abroad. MSc graduates are employed by companies producing, transforming and developing materials (metallic, polymeric, ceramic, glassy and composites) for applications in various fields, such as microelectronics, telecommunication, energetics, photovoltaics, construction, transports, cultural heritage, environment and biomedicine, as well as in industrial laboratories of companies and public institutions. Moreover, MSc graduates acquire the knowledge and competencies needed to work in the fields of research, development and application of nanostructured materials and nanotechnology.
