Prerequisites: It is required a good knowledge of the Fourier transform and Calculus. It is suggested to follow the course of Applied Optics of the Bachelor Degree in Astronomy to have a basic knowledge of Optics for Astronomy.
Target skills and knowledge: The student will get an advanced knowledge of optical and radio interferometry and will learn how to reduce the interferometric data from the Atacama Large Millimiter Array (ALMA) and the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO).
Examination methods: Oral exam about the topics discussed in the lectures.
Assessment criteria: Participation and commitment during lectures. Knowledge of the program. Accuracy and rigor of the exposition. Capability of analysis and interpreting interforometric data.
Course unit contents: 1) Fundamentals of optical and radio astronomy.
2) Optical and radio telescopes. Resolution and observational techniques.
3) Elements of interferometry.
4) Optical and radio interferometry.
5) The UV plan.
6) Image synthesis at optic and radio wavelengths.
7) Elements of disturbance and calibration of interferometric observations.
8) Data reduction tests of interferometric data in the computer laboratory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and exercises of ALMA and VLTI data reduction. Lectures are given in Italian.
