Prerequisites: This course is not for students with a Bachelor Degree in Astronomy, but for those with Bachelor Degree in Physics or any other bachelor degree which provides the fundamentals of Physics and Mathematics.
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the fundamentals of modern Astronomy and Astrophysics, along with the related research techniques and technologies. Knowledge of the structures and physical processes of the Universe at different scales according to the present state of the art. Ability to properly retrieve data about astronomical research papers and databases.
Examination methods: Oral or written exam with open questions on the topics discussed during the lectures.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will be based on the knowledge of the program, on its critical understanding, and ability and accuracy in presenting the topics discussed during the lectures.
Course unit contents: 1) Fundamentals of spherical astronomy and astronomical times.
2) Principles of Celestial Mechanics.
3) Astronomical telescopes, instruments and detectors.
4) Astrophysical techniques: photometry and spectroscopy.
5) Principles of stellar structure and evolution.
6) Structure and physical processes of the Universe at different scales: from our Solar System to the largest scales.
7) Tools and resources for the astrophysical research: software and archives.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures and exercises on selected topics of the program. Lectures are given in Italian.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The lectures will the suggested textbooks and will be possibly supplemented by lecture notes by the teached available through the Moodle website of the course on the e-learning platform of the Department of Physics and Astronomy "G. Galilei" (
