Prerequisites: Basic preparation on Organic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: The course tends to provide a good knowledge of production and transformation processes and applications of the main industrial polymers of interest, meeting with methodological aspects related to the main polymer analysis of industrial interest through laboratory experiments.
Examination methods: Oral
Assessment criteria: Students should demonstrate to have acquired knowledge about the content of teaching and the ability to discuss the topics proposed during the examination
Course unit contents: Part A (5 ETCS)
Introduction to Polymer Science.
General information on solutions and fractionation.
Methods for determination of average molecular weights: osmometry, light scattering, viscometry, GPC.
Spectroscopic techniques, UV-Visible, IR, NMR.
Amorphous polymers.
Polymers and crystallinity.
Elastomers and fibers.
Thermal analysis (DSC, TGA, DTA)
Wide and small angle X-ray diffraction.
Optical and electron microscopy.
Elements of linear viscoelasticity.
Mechanical properties and their measurement.
Rheology and rheometry.

Part B (4 ETCS)

Identification of polymers.
Determination of the isotacticity index of polypropylene.
Thermal analysis: melting and crystallization, crystallinity degree, glass transition.
IR spectroscopy: identification of some polymers.
Tensile testing of a polymer.
Extrusion of a polymeric formulation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course takes place through lectures in the classroom using slides that are provided by the teacher.
Laboratory experiments are planned to meet with methodological aspects related to the main polymer analysis of industrial interest.
