Syllabus
Prerequisites: The knowledge gained in the basic courses of Inorganic chemistry, Physical chemistry and Organic chemistry
Target skills and knowledge: Acquire the basic knowledge of the structure, chemical and physical properties and preparation methods of industrial glasses and ceramic materials
Examination methods: Oral examination of the knowledge acquired through the presentation by the student of a report regarding one of the topics covered
Assessment criteria: Verification of knowledge starting from the report submitted
Course unit contents: Chemical-physical aspects of the glass.
The glassy state: conditions of formation of the glass and structural theories.
Features of the glassy state: viscosity, mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical and chemical properties.
Behavior under stress and breakage.
Aging processes and recovery.
Crystallization processes controlled: glass ceramic.
Special glass optical fibers
Synthesis of thin films of glass, chemistry at the interface of the glass with organic polymers.
The bioglasses, the sol-gel glasses and the aero-gels.
Industrial aspects: raw materials; preparation of the batch; reactions and phase transformations during the melting process, installations for the production of flat glass and hollow glass.

Chemical-physical aspects of ceramics
Composition and structure; mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical and chemical properties.
Ceramic products classic and innovative: refractory products for electric, magnetic, nuclear and medical use.
Industrial aspects: raw materials and their selection; installations for the preparation and shaping of the ceramic mixture, drying and firing, enamels, aerogels
Analysis techniques of glass and ceramics surfaces(OM, SEM, STM, AFM, XPS, SIMS).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom lectures involve the use of slides, films and websites. The material will then be provided to the students of the course
