Syllabus

Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide theoretical and applicative tools for the description of the fundamental operations of the chemical industry, and for the design and management of some equipments for separation processes of matter and energy exchange.
Examination methods: Written. The exams will divided into 2 parts: 2 numerical problems and 2 open questions.
Assessment criteria: Assessments on i) knowledge of the course contents ii) basic numerical problems solving (regarding heat exchange and separation processes).
Course unit contents: Categorization of works: basic elements for understanding and reading of a plan, main types of graphical representation. Hydraulic circuits: valves, fittings, pipes. Operating principles of fluid machines. Transport of liquids; positive displacement and kinetics pumps. Transportation of gas; compressors, fans, blowers. Heat exchange without phase change; heat exchangers, concentric tube heat exchangers, plate-type. Heat transfer with phase change: boil and kettles. Separation by evaporation; simple evaporators with multiple effects. Mixing equipment for chemical processes: stirred tank reactors and
static mixers.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: 1. Frontal lectures.
2. Numerical problems solved during the class.
3. Study visit at an industrial site.
