Prerequisites: Basics of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics
Basics of diffusion
Target skills and knowledge: Description of the superficial properties of the solid
Crystallography in two dimensions
Colloids and interfaces
Microscopic vision of the catalytic processes heterogenous
Examination methods: oral/3 questions for a total of ca. 1/2 hour)
Assessment criteria: The assessment of the preparation of the student will be based on the understanding of the topics of the course , on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in a independent and conscious manner
Course unit contents: Elements of the structure of solids.Lattices of inorganic structures of importance in the catalysis. Basic concepts of crystal chemistry. Monocrystalline, polycrystalline and amorphous solids. Basics on defectivity of solids. Introduction To Interphases. Technological importance of the surfaces. Historical notes on Surface Science. Thin layers. Interfacial energy and thermodynamics of interfaces. Dispersed solids and surface area. Colloids and dispersions. Surfactants. Ideal and real surfaces Crystallography of surfaces: direct and reciprocal lattice. Relaxation and surface reconstructions. Notations on the surface reconstructions. Methodologies for the structural study of the surfaces: Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED). Surface defects. Roughness and surface morphology. Methodologies to study the morphology of surfaces: Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and tunneling (STM). Solid-vacuum and solid-gas Interphases . Methods of production and use of vacuum in Surface Science. Elements of the kinetic theory of gases. Sticking coefficient. Calculation of the average life time of a clean surface. Chemisorption and physisorption. Interadsorbate interactions. Adsorption isotherms. Desorption. Programmed thermal desorption (TPD). Solid-solid interfases: Epitaxy. Growth mechanisms of thin layers and related elementary atomic processes. Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). Methodologies for creating nanostructures: thin films, nanodots, nanowires. Spectroscopic methods for the study of surfaces. Surface Sensitivity. Photon-atom, electron-atom and ion-atom scattering processes. Photoelectron spectroscopy. Vibrational spectroscopy (IRAS and HREELS). Reactivity of the surfaces. Mobility of adsorbed species. Kinetics of the reactions at the surface. Comparison of reactions in homogeneous and heterogeneous. Examination of some surface reactions.
