Target skills and knowledge: The main purpose of this laboratory is the acquisition of a theoretical apparatus, techniques and tools that are at the basis of the health psychologist activities, who deal with pediatric pain assessment and its management through non-pharmacological tecniques
Examination methods: The profit evaluation will take place through the examination of a presentation realized during the laboratory hours, through working in small groups, using material provided by the professor about the treated topics. Participation in the activities proposed during the workshop will also be evaluated. The evaluation of the profit will take place on the last day of the workshop, with the opening of an exam session.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria will include the quality of participation in the laboratory and the quality of the work done in a group. Elements that will then compete in defining the final evaluation will be active participation during the lessons, the activities carried out autonomously in the application of the contents presented, the participatory and shared presence in the working group.
Course unit contents: This laboratory is part of the set of laboratories offered within the Second Cycle Degree in Clinical Developmental Psychology. The laboratory activity will be provided in small groups (maximum 20 students) in the presence of the professor. Experiential and professionalizing learning techniques will be used. As in adults, even in the pediatric field, pain is a very frequent symptom during illness and, among all, it is the one that most weighs down and frightens the child and his family. Yet, until a few years ago, it was thought that the newborn and the child did not experience pain with the same intensity as the adult. The laboratory will address the assessment and management of pediatric pain, since, at clinical level, we have valid instruments for measuring pain for children both verbal and preverbal and we have different treatment available, pharmacological and non-pharmacological, safe and effective.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Classroom activities require the regular attendance of students, who will be divided into small groups to facilitate their learning process in terms of the professional and experiential basis of the contents that define the laboratory activities themselves. In this perspective, students participation in at least 70% of the lessons is recommended to allow for an in-depth understanding of the learning contents. Group work in the classroom is an integral part of the teaching method of the laboratory and is one of the learning activities, in addition to the assessment of students’individual contribution. Students who, for exceptional reasons, are unable to attend are advised to contact the professor in a timely manner to arrange for alternative activities. The topics will be treated through participated lessons and discussion of the material presented, with examples of research and clinical, audiovisual supports and practical exercises in the classroom. Work in the classroom and in groups is an integral part of the teaching of the laboratory and is one of the learning activities, alongside the verification of the individual contribution from each student.
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the laboratory, articles drawn from the international scientific literature will be provided, as well as training material in slides edited by the teacher
