Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge on general Cognitive functions like: perception, attention, language and memory
Target skills and knowledge: Theoretical background of the development of the neural basis of cognitive function.
Basic knowledge of neural development of cognitive functions and methods to study the neural mechanism of cognitive development.
Examination methods: The exam is conducted in oral form in English and questions will be formulated (usually 2 to 4 questions) both on the course content and on reasoning on possible critical situations of development during the life span. The exam lasts on average 15 to 30 minutes.
Assessment criteria: The student will be evaluated on the basis of the final mark to the oral exam plus the evaluation of the presentation/discussions given by the students in the class
Course unit contents: We will consider questions such as: What is the nature of developmental change? What are the brain mechanisms underlying cognitive, perceptual, social, and emotional development during infancy and childhood? We will also evaluate implications of findings from developmental cognitive neuroscience for broader scientific issues including nature vs. nurture, critical periods in development, and the modularity of mental functions. An integral part of the course will be careful consideration of the major methods of developmental cognitive neuroscience including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), recordings of evoked response potentials (ERPs), and behavioral marker tasks. We will devote particular attention to the unique challenges of applying these methods to the study of infants and children in typical and atypical development.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Class sessions will usually consist of short lectures period followed by a student led group presentation and discussion of the weekly readings. In addition, we will visit different labs on campus to learn more about the methods and issues of developmental cognitive neuroscience. The course will be entirely in English
