Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge about the main stages of the linguistic and communicative development
General knowledge of the cognitive development
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide knowledge about:
a)linguistic and communicative development in typical populations as a fundament for the understanding of the same processes in populations that follow an atypical developmental trajectory
b)evaluation of language and the diagnosis of language disorders
c)language intervention programs for children
Examination methods: THe exam consists of 2 parts:
1) Written report
-summary of a scientific article (3 pages)
-discussion of a clinical case (4 pages)
- discussion of an intervention project (no length limits)
The report has to be written and delivered 2 weeks before the exam session.
2) Oral interview is a in deep discussion of the written report. It is required to describe and discuss the evaluation and diagnostic process of the main linguistic disorders in childhood
Assessment criteria: 1) Written report
-ability to sinthesize information
- text coherence
- exaustivity of the provided information
-fattibility of provided information
- originality and creativity in intervention project planning and writing
2) Oral interview
- ability to think critically
- the ability to transfer theoretical knowledge to the clinical and educational practice
Course unit contents: 1)Typical language development:
-The analysis of the linguistic competence, with reference to the main theoretical approaches, from the first forms of prelinguistic communication in infants to the literacy development
-The analysis of the stages and the processes of acquisition of Italian in monolingual and bilingual children
2)Atypical language development
-Review of the main pathologies and risk conditions for the development of language disorders in children
-Description of the main language assessment methods
-Analysis of some rehabilitation strategies
3)Practice
-Discussion of some scientific papers (English)
-Presentation and discussion of clinical cases: from the diagnosis to the treatment
- Presentation and discussion of some language intervention programs in atypical development
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons for the contents 1) and 2) (see above)
-Practice: Students will be allowed to consult and use some tests for the assessment of language development (administration procedure, score attribution and interpretation of the performance); discussion of clinical cases presented in class: from the diagnosis to the rehabilitation planning
Part of the practice will be conducted during the classes while the other will be carried out individually or in small groups, and outside of regular classes. At the end of the practice, students will be required to write a short report, essay or project on the activities carried out, which will constitute part of the final evaluation exam (see the exam procedure).
Additional notes about suggested reading: During the course, in particular during the practical part of the course (which is part of the exam), the students will be provided with material which is useful and NECESSARY for the exam preparion as description and examples of clinical cases, adio and video materials, slides of lessons, scientifc papers.
There are no differences in the exam for attendants and non-attendants of the course.
