Syllabus
Prerequisites: For students of the Master Degree in Clinical Psychology (M1B), the course is viewed as an extension of several basic courses (i.e., Psychobiology, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry).
The course examines the principles underlying brain functioning in psychoses, with many links to neuroanatomy, neuroscience, clinical psychology and psychiatry.
Students should already have an adequate knowledge of cognitive processes and anatomo-physiological bases of the central nervous system.
Target skills and knowledge: The course provides a systematic review of the psychobiological bases of the main psychotic spectrum disorders (in particular Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Paranoid, Schizoid and Schizotypal Personality Disorders). Results from genetic, electrophysiological, neurochemical and structural/functional neuroimaging will be discussed for all disorders. As much as possible, the principal models proposed to explain the pathogenesis of each disorder will be presented, to integrate information from the multiple approaches of neurosciences.
Examination methods: The written examination consists of 32 multiple-choice questions, in English. Time limit: 30 minutes.
Registration for the written examination is mandatory on UNIWEB, 10 to 5 days before the date of the examination.
Assessment criteria: Students’ evaluations will test their comprehension of the subjects covered and their acquisition of the methods and topics discussed throughout the course. The examination will test both general and specific contents.
Course unit contents: - Brief introduction to Psychotic Spectrum Disorders
- Methods and experimental techniques in psychobiological research
- Schizophrenia: genetic, biological (neurodevelopment hypotheses, structural and functional brain abnormalities, neurochemical changes), environmental and psychosocial factors; pathogenetic hypotheses and models.
- Bipolar Disorder: genetic, biological (structural and functional brain abnormalities, neurochemical changes), environmental and/or psychosocial components; pathogenetic hypotheses.
- Cluster A Personality Disorders (Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal): genetic, biological (structural and functional brain abnormalities, neurochemical changes), environmental and/or psychosocial components; pathogenetic hypotheses.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lessons on course topics, interspersed with film clips. The student should expand the contents discussed by reading selected chapters and reviews.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Selected chapters, reviews and scientific articles will be recommended and available, in English, on the course website (Moodle platform).
