Prerequisites: Knowledge of basic elements of Social Psychology.
Target skills and knowledge: The goal of the course is to introduce the issue of human aggression as the psychological concept. Mainly the course will concentrate on violence as a social phenomenon: the prevention strategies; the responsiveness of the justice system; the community-based initiatives.
Examination methods: The final exam will consist of open questions.
Assessment criteria: Full knowledge of the books for examination and critical thinking skills.
Course unit contents: The course will be guided by the following research questions: What is aggression? Is aggression inborn? What is the relationship between aggression and violence? To answer these questions, the course will analyze the many types of violence through the connection of psychological theories with specific social contexts.
Topics include:
1) Theories of aggression
2) Situational elicitation of aggressive behaviour
3) A social interactionist theory of coercive actions
4) “Good violence” and “bad violence”: social order and meanings of violence
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lessons, readings in classroom, video, powerpoint on the lessons, focus discussions and specific group activities.
Additional notes about suggested reading: The course will provide guidance on additional study materials.
