Syllabus
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of clinical psychology. Main concepts and theories of psychodynamic child and adolescent psychology. A basic knowledge of psychological interview and assessment tools for children and adolescents can also be useful.
Target skills and knowledge: The course aims to provide specialist and professional knowledge on the main psychopathological syndromes in children and adolescents. Along with the theoretical analysis of classical psychopathology (psychodynamic matrix), the specific description of the main symptomatic manifestations by means of clinical examples will help to clarify clinical concepts.
Examination methods: Written test: open and multiple-choice questions
Assessment criteria: The following acquisitions are evaluated:
• recognizing and describing elementary psychopathological phenomena
• reasoning in terms of diagnostic hypotheses based on clinical histories and expressing critical ideas
• deepening of the theoretical contents
• relevance, completeness and precision (terminology, synthesis, etc.) of the answers
• optional participation in ongoing assessments during lessons (for attending students)
Course unit contents: 1) BASIC CONCEPTS ON PSYCHOPATHOLOGY
• The neuropsychic development between nature and the environment. Individual characteristics and environmental influences, with particular reference to parenting: a complex interaction
• The problem of theoretical models and diagnoses in child and adolescent age
• The diagnostic process with the child and the family
• Psychopathology classification systems (DSM System, ICD-10 Classification, Diagnostic Classification: 0-3, PDM): bases, criteria for definition and diagnostic classification.

The main psychopathological frameworks are treated, referring to the classical psychodynamic psychopathology, and in particular the psychoanalytic approach, and to the most widespread nosographic classifications. The clinical and therapeutic implications in psychological work with children, adolescents and families are also deepened.

2) CHILD PSYCHOPATHOLOGY
• Very early disturbances. When suffering is expressed through sleep and food
• Psyche and soma. The complex problem of child psychosomatic suffering
• The trauma and its developmental impact. Beyond Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
• Autism spectrum disorders. Between genetics and environment
• Behavioral disorders and the ADHD problem. Is there a meaning for opposition and hyperactivity?
• Affective and anxiety disorders. Between attachment and separation.

3) ADOLESCENT PSYCHOPATHOLOGY
• Adolescence between physiology and pathology. Symptoms of the neurotic area
• Conduct disorders, aggressiveness and impulsivity. The meaning of acting
• Affective disorders. Depression, mourning and separation in adolescence
• Psychoses. Breakdown and psychotic onset
• Personality disorders and borderline pathologies. The question of identity
• Eating disorders and addictions. Adolescence between addiction and independence
• Suicide attempts and self-harming. The problem of the adolescent body
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: • Frontal lessons
• presentations of clinical cases
• presentations by students and discussion
Additional notes about suggested reading: Although a psychodynamic approach to psychopathology is privileged, consulting the currently widely used diagnostic manuals (ICD-10, DSM-5 etc...) can favor the dialogue with the most up-to-date scientific and medical knowledge
