Prerequisites: Methodological topics presented in any course, and in particular in the Psychometrics course of the First Cycle degree ( or Bachelor ‘s degree) are considered prerequisites of this course.
Target skills and knowledge: At the end of the course students are supposed to acquire knowledge and competence both theoretical and applicative of specific methods and models for the analysis of discrete variables which are relevant for research and applications in clinical and dynamic psychology. Students are supposed to acquire satisfactory calculation ability, capacity to analyze and to interpret data.
Examination methods: A written exam is provided which is characterized by multiple choice questions. Some questions are meant to test the theoretical and formal knowledge of the methods to analyze the data, others are concerned with the knowledge and ability in applying the computation procedures. During the written exam it is allowed to consult the manual of the course, the statistical tables, also the calculator can be used
Assessment criteria: The evaluation criteria of the written exam are concerned with knowledge, competence and ability as described above, acquired by means of training activities in class and with personal study. More precisely the exam evaluation is concerned with:
1) The knowledge of the theoretical contents of the methods and models presented, specifically the formal implications, the properties, the parameters estimation procedures, the validation methods.
2) The ability to apply the calculation, the analysis of the data and the interpretation of the results.
Course unit contents: The training activity contents are:
1. Psychometrics: reviewing chosen topics (11 hours)
a) Measurement theory
b) Probability functions
c) Logarithm transformation
2. Log-linear models (30 hours)
a)Theory and definitions
b) Bivariate log-linear models
c) Bidimensional tables effects
d) Hierarchical multivariate log-linear models
e) Effects and their relations with hierarchical log-linear models
f) Examples and applications in clinical psychology.
3) The Rasch model (22 hours)
a) The Latent Trait Theory, Measurement and the Rasch model
b) The parameters estimate
c) The model validity
d) Examples and applications in clinical psychology.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal lectures are the preeminent teaching method. During lectures topics are treated both from the theoretical point of view and the applicative one; they are presented with numerous research examples and applications relevant for clinical and dynamic psychology. In order to deepen the study and the comprehension of the different topics, every week the lectures are followed by guided exercises with the direct participation of the students.
By means of personal study, students are required to enlarge and deepen his/her knowledge of all the topics presented, further he/she must exercise the calculus procedures using the readings suggested in class.
