Prerequisites: Basic knowledge is that acquired in the courses of the first level degree (L3), in particular, Social Psychology, Group Psychology, Methodology in Socio-Psychological Research, and Opinions and Attitudes.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of this course is to investigate important psychosocial phenomena in healthcare contexts, in particular, in the physician-patient interaction, such as: consequences of ethnic/racial disparities, patient dehumanization. Models explaining these phenomena will be deepened, and related studies will be analyzed. The student will acquire essential knowledge for the understanding of psychosocial aspects of healthcare relations and will learn intervention strategies to improve these relations.
Examination methods: Exams will be written and will consist of true/false and open-ended questions. International students are given the opportunity to take the exam in English.
Assessment criteria: Preparation of the student will be evaluated on the basis of the understanding of the subjects analyzed, and the ability to translate knowledge into applications. Students have to demonstrate competence on the following points: psychological processes produced by ethnic/racial disparities in healthcare contexts; patient dehumanization; psychosocial studies carried out in healthcare settings. Students have also to show methodological skills relating to research designs and measures applied in this Social Psychology’s field.
Course unit contents: 1) ethnic/racial disparities in medical interactions;
2) humanity perceptions in healthcare relations;
3) communication in the physician-patient interaction, involving, in particular, migrant patients in Italy;
4) in-depth analysis of studies carried out in healthcare settings.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: During lessons, all the program contents will be discussed. The active and critical participation of students will be fostered.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Study materials in English will be provided, if required, for international students.
