Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of group psychology and of the main methodologies of psychosocial investigation is useful.
Target skills and knowledge: The aim of the course is to provide knowledge concerning the main strategies of prejudice reduction, so to favour the ability to understand and analyse the phenomena that take place between social groups. After having briefly analysed the causes of social prejudices, the applicative solutions proposed by recent intergroup social psychology for increasing harmony between groups will be deeply described. Methodological issues will be considered too.
Passing the esam, the students will develop the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to the different social contexts, so to recognize the causes of prejudice and discrimination, and to propose intervention strategies that are theoretically and empirically grounded.
Examination methods: The exam is written, with three open questions. Students have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete the exam.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation will consider the understanding of the considered topics, the learning of concepts and of the specific language of the discipline and of the proposed methodologies; also the ability to apply the learned knowledge will be taken into account.
Course unit contents: Causes of intergroup prejudice
Perspective taking and empathy
Intergroup contact
Strategies based on categorization processes
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course includes theoretical and practice lectures. In the theoretical lectures the topics will be considered in their general aspects. The practice lectures will be dedicated to a deeper investigation of the explained topics and to the presentation of research examples. Students are invited to participate actively and critically in the different educational proposals.
Additional notes about suggested reading: Concerning the first text, to be studied in full, it is important to acquire the ability to handle, for each chapter, the different theories and models proposed, as well as at least one research example, if available, for each theory or model.
For the second text, it is required the ability to summarize the content of each of the indicated chapters.
