Syllabus
Prerequisites: It is important to have a basic knowledge of the history of psychology, psychology of relationships and of emotional-affective processes. It is also essential the willingness to assume a non-reductionist and cultural perspective, in order to deal with issues concerning the relationship among psychology, spirituality, religion and existential dilemmas.
Target skills and knowledge: The course offers the basic competences of a critical approach inherent to the themes of death and dying, in order to handle educational, learning and support activities. The abilities to acquire pertain to theoretical and methodological aspects useful in the management of relations in bereavement, palliative care, decision-making processes.
Examination methods: Written exam
Project works (only for attending students)
Assessment criteria: Demonstrate the ability to critically think on conventional representations of death
Demonstrate the ability to understand the relationships between grief / loss and the cultural-historical dimensions
Demonstrate the ability to deal with the theme of death in an intercultural way
Course unit contents: The course contents are the following:
Death and Dying: biological and cultural factors and their transformation in history, psychology, sociology and philosophy of religion, funeral rituals and symbolism of death, Terror Management Theory.
Palliative Care: Medical Humanities Approach, Narrative Medicine, multidisciplinary approach, quality of life and management of pain / suffering in terminality, WHO and the cooperative intervention in palliative team.
Bioethics: social management of dying, advance directives, decision making processes right to self-determination, advance directives and the Oviedo Convention.
Particular attention will be given to the evolution of Western thought inherent to the ontological representation of death.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course will consist primarily of lectures. The following activities will propostw: group works, exercises on provided materials, case presentations. The active involvement of the students will be highly appreciated, and specific topics will be proposed for the study. In particular, working groups will be organized for project-works (PW). The PW will be evaluated and will be part of the evaluation of the final exam.
