Target skills and knowledge: Introduction the the problems of physical and technological nature related to the use of high electric fields within insulating systems. Practical applications in relation to generation and measurement of high voltages and to the components dedesign for the electric networks.
Examination methods: Oral examination
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of technological and physical problems in presence of high electric fields.
Applications to real cases connected to equipment in use in the electric networks.
Course unit contents: High Voltage Laboratories
Production of HV DC , AC and impulse voltages
Voltage multipliers, cascade transformers, Marx generator

Measurement of voltages, currents and electric field
Voltage dividers for the different voltage types
Analysis of the influence of the stray components and dynamic behaviour of impulse dividers

Gas insulated systems
Fundamentals of ionization processes and relevant parameters
Dielectric behaviour of SF6 and SF6/nitrogen mixtures

Physics of the long spark in air
Streamer and leader development under Lightning and Switching impulses
AC and DC corona
