Prerequisites: Basic principles of hydrology (hydrologic response, Darcy's law), basic concepts of statistics and mathematics.
Target skills and knowledge: Description and modeling of hydrological processes driving the soil water balance and water resources in rivers. Characterization of streamflows, in relation to management issues. The major learning objectives are: i) stochastic description and modeling pf rainfall and soil moisture; ii) understanding of the dynamics of streamflows, in relation to the atmospheric and hydrologic driving processes; iii) water resurces management issues: reservoir exploitation and water resources for anthropogenic uses.
Examination methods: Oral exam, and discussion of the homeworks
Assessment criteria: 1. Knowledge of the specific technical contents of the course
2. Completeness and originality of the homework reports, ability to critically defend and discuss the reports
3. Exposition ability - personal reinterpretation and elaboration of the course topics
4. Ability of creating links among the different parts/topics of the course
Course unit contents: 1. Water resources and the hydrologic cycle: recalling basic concepts from probability and hydrology – 2. Modelling and forecasting of rainfall processes: i) Zero-dimensional rainfall models: poissoninan models; Cluster models (Bartlett Lewis, Neymann-Scott); ii) Rainfall forecasting (outline): global circulation models, limited area models, downscaling, meteorologic forecasting and flood protection – 3. Soil moisture dynamics: i) soil moisture dynamics and runoff production; ii) stochastic modelling of soil moisture; iii) soil moisture and plant nutrition – 4. Streamflow characteristics: i) floods and droughts; ii) continuous models of the hydrologic response; iii) stochastic analysis of streamflows series (duration curves, distributions of extremes) – 5. Water resources management models: i) reservoirs: floods mitigation, industrial and agricultural supply; ii) Reservoirs regulation; 6. Irrigation systems and schemes (optional, depending on the time available).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Teaching:
frontal teaching with power point slides

personal study and homeworks (stochastic modeling of rainfall, stream flows and reservoir regulation, run of river power plant optimization; written reports to be discussed during the exam required)
