Prerequisites: Basic understanding of environmental issues is requested. Non-engineering students need ability and readiness to study the course topics under a technology-oriented perspective. The course is taught entirely in English.
Target skills and knowledge: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have acquired an integrated understanding of resources management, including renewable resources, and will have gained the competence to address sustainability of resources utilisation. This includes the basic skills to assess material and energy flows in engineered environments. This further includes the ability to identify and apply suitable strategies, methodologies and technologies.
Examination methods: Exam methods will be announced soon.
Assessment criteria: Knowledge of the specific contents of the course will be assessed in the exam. The student is required to demonstrate familiarity with concepts, methodologies and technologies covered in the course.

Completion of non-mandatory activities (homework, student project) throughout the semester will be assessed under a bonus scheme.
Course unit contents: A) Fundamentals of sustainability (incl. Planetary Boundaries, SDGs; Measuring sustainability)
B) Types of resources, incl. renewable resources; Pools, cycles and sinks of resources; Dynamics in resources consumption (key trends, cycles); Strategies for sustainable use of resources; Decoupling of resources use from prosperity
C) Concept of Industrial Ecology; Industrial metabolism; Material and energy flows
D) Circular economy; Perspectives from industry; Cleaner production
E) The challenge “energy”; Renewable energy
F) The challenge “food”; The resource biomass
G) Resources and urban growth; Innovative concepts
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Frontal teaching (lecture), to be complemented by personal studies;

In addition, students are offered the possibility to complete homework (not mandatory) and to work on assigned student projects on selected topics (not mandatory).
Homework assignments (questions to be answered or short reports to be written) will be handed out during the semester with specified deadlines.
Topics for student projects will be assigned in the first 3 weeks of the course, and results are due by around beginning of the second half of the semester (exact deadlines to be specified). Project groups with up to 4 students can be formed. Project groups can give an oral presentation, hand in a written report, or both.
The student can choose to complete all non-mandatory course elements, some of them or none. Bonus points are accumulated with the completion of each non-mandatory element (each homework assignment, the oral presentation of project results, the written project report).
Additional notes about suggested reading: Together with additional information and suggestion of additional readings, the presentation slides used during classroom teaching are made available to students.
