Syllabus
Prerequisites: No preparatory requests
Target skills and knowledge: Knowledge of the new product development process and its management
Developing a critical approach to innovation management
Knowledge of what is a firm, the differnt organizational structures and functions
Integrating technocal and managerial knowledge
Knowledge of the main methods to evaluate production costs and use infomration on costs for decision making
Knowledge of the principles of project management
Ability to use a software for project management
Ability to use a software for patent search during the first phases of the new product development process
Examination methods: Written exam with both open-ended and closed questions as well as exercises
Project work
Optional oral exam
Assessment criteria: The final evaluation is based on the written exam and the presentation of the project work.
The written exam is supposed to test not only the theory, but also the ability to use theoretical background to solve practical problems.
The project work is supposed to make students simulate the generation of a new product idea and its management. The content, the presentation and the ability to answer questions are the criteria used to provide an evaluation.
Course unit contents: PART 1: BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

1. Production costs - Products: unitary porduction costs, total costs, fixed costs, variable costs, optimizing costs and production capacity, the concept of amortization
2. Production costs - Processes: costs control in job shops and in-line production
3. Production costs - Decision making

Part 1b
1. Introduction to project management: what is a project and what is project manageemnt, organizing for project management, the figure of the project manager
2. PMBOK: Methodology for project management

Part 1c
1. What is a patent and how information on patents can be used within firms
2. Patent search in patent software
