Syllabus
Prerequisites: Fundamental concepts of chemistry, physics, and fluid mechanics are required.
No prerequisite.
Target skills and knowledge: Theoretical and practical competences in the remediation of contaminated sites caused by anthropogenic activities with reference to the Italian and EU law. Ability to critically use the knowledge and methods acquired for professional development.
During the lectures will be exposed theoretical and practical aspects related to contaminated sites. Will be stimulated discussion on specific topics. At the end of the course students will be able to identify the characteristics and relevance of a contaminated site, express opinions and views on the techniques and processes of reclamation in a multidisciplinary professional.
Examination methods: Written exam:
The examination does not include the use of books, notes; a standard scientific calculator will be allowed, but programmable computers or other electronic decices will not be allowed.
Each question will be of equivalent weight and marks for sub-sections will be clearly indicated.
Students must enter their answers legibly by hand in the answer sheet provided.

Exam type scheme:
5 open questions requiring a detailed description. Are also included short exercises, process schemes.
The exam duration is 1.5 hours

Examples of exam questions will be presented during the course.
Assessment criteria: Students must demonstrate knowledge of the subject, problem-solving, with logical and integrated answers and with the production of process schemes.

The evaluation aims to:
- Encourage and reinforce learning.
- be fair and equitable about student performance.
- Give to students the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.
Course unit contents: Introduction of the course. Exam modalities. Land conservation: environmental policies in the EU and in Italy. National legislation. Causes and effects of environmental degradation. Soil health and soil quality. Rainwater, composition and effects. Groundwater quality, water supply, security zones. Sources of soil, groundwater pollution. Soil physical and chemical properties. Biophysico-chemical processes of heavy metals and metalloids in soil environments. Site characterization for subsurface remediation. Approaches for modelling transport processes in soil and aquifers. Physico-chemical properties and toxicological properties of the contaminants. Risk analysis in management of contaminated sites. Active and passive containment barriers to prevent migration of pollutant. Remediation technologies for soil and groundwater: In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO), Aerobic Biodegradation, Anaerobic Bioremediation, Bioaugmentation, In Situ Chemical Reduction (ISCR), Metals Immobilization, Excavation, Vapour Intrusion Mitigation, Combined Treatment Approaches. Screen matrix of remediation technologies. Factors that may limit the applicability and effectiveness of remediation processes. Development and reuse of brownfields. Reclamation landfill, etc. Case studies.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Knowledge is provided mainly through lectures. Students will be encouraged to classroom discussion and learning through independent reading; students will be supported in this by the professor with the provision of a list of appropriate readings. Additional learning opportunity will be provided by one/two lectures by highly qualified guests.

- From time to time, bibliographic material or recommended, such as selection of book parts, scientific articles, normative documents, etc. and recommended books.
