Target skills and knowledge: The course is aimed at presenting the most relevant methods and tools for the strategic environmental management of products and processes as well as explaining potential ways for an effective application of such tools in order to support the decision making process of companies and public administration.
Considering the different topics presented, the following skills and competences are expected to be developed:
1) knowledge on the principles of strategic environmental management and their application;
2) development of effective environmental management strategies at product and organizational level;
3) understand and choose the most effective tools for environmental management of companies such as Environmental management Systems , Life Cycle Assessment, environmental footprints, environmental labelling;
4) assess the applicability of the most relevant international standards (ISO, EN) and national standards (UNI) for the certification of environmental performances at product and process level;
5) Translate environmental management processes into opportunities for the competitiveness of companies.
Examination methods: Test of knowledge is based on a written test with questions on each of the topic presented along the course; oral exam is foresee sunder request of the student in order to improve the evaluation of the written text
Assessment criteria: Evaluation is expressed evaluatng each answer of the student with a score between 0 and 30. The result of each question contribute equally to the final mark.
The following criteria will be evaluated:
1) completeness of acquired knowledge;
2) effectiveness of technical language related to strategic environmental management;
3) capability to critically evaluat applicability of strategic environmental management tools
Course unit contents: The following topics related to strategic environmental management will be presneted during the course:
1) Environmental management system for the monitoring and improvement of environmental performances of processes;
2) life Cycle Assessment of the quantification and reduction of potential environmental impacts of products;
3) Environmental footprints for the management of environmental subjects of interest for society such as climate change (carbon footprint) water resources (water footprint);
4) Eco-design of processes and products for the design and development of new products and processes with improved environmental performances;
5) eco-labelling and certification or self-declaration of products environmental performances.
All of these topics will be presented at the light of international (ISO, EN) and national (UNI) standards for strategic environmental management.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods: Lectures will take place directly front to front with the presentation of basic knowledge and applications in real case studies.
Students are asked to work on the material delivered by the professor during lectures.
