Syllabus
Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of the fundamental basics on electronics, electrical engineering and automatic controls.
Target skills and knowledge: Acquisition of basic knowledge in the field of CE marking, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrical safety. Knowledge of the European regulatory framework relating to electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety. Ability to correctly interpret the most common electromagnetic interference phenomena. Ability to properly set a procedure for the establishment of compliance of an electrical or electronic equipment from the point of view of EMC and electrical safety. Ability to perform measurements in the field of EMC pre-compliance and full-compliance analysis. Ability to set up and plan appropriate strategies to design and solve problems with EMC criteria.
Assessment criteria: The evaluation of the preparation of the student will be based on an understanding of the arguments, on the acquisition of concepts and methodologies proposed and the ability to apply them in an autonomous and aware way.
Course unit contents: The CE marking and the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electrical Safety (LVD) directives. Electrical Safety: the electrical hazard, ground systems, protection systems, EMC implications, measurement techniques. Basics on EMC and main physical phenomena involved in the field of EMC: EMC emission and coupling phenomena, crosstalk, resonance of circuits, common and differential mode currents, clock's spectrum, switching currents, return currents, ground loop, image currents, etc. Full-compliance measurements of radiated and conducted emissions, and pre-compliance analysis techniques. Conducted and radiated immunity tests. EMC design and mitigation of common problems. Use and design of EMC filters and shielding structures.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods: The course is proposed through lectures and demos. In the lectures, the teacher exposes the arguments underlying particular issues, the link with other topics, and their application through practical examples from the application field.
Personal study finally allows the student to go deeper in what realized in class.
